1999 Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape (12/25/2009)
14.0% alcohol. A real delight. Pure red fruit on the nose, mixed with a peppery, earthy edge and plenty of earth. In the mouth, elegant and graceful, with exceptional purity. A true delight to drink, with bright fruit racing across the palate, bolstered by complexity. Long, delicious finish. Plenty of sediment at the bottom of the bottle. No rough edges. This is ready to go. And just marvelous. A-/A -
2003 Sine Qua Non Chardonnay Mr. K The Noble Man - USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley (12/25/2009)
10.3% alcohol. Strikingly dark golden color; it gives the impression of a wine older than six years. Drinking perfectly. On the nose, soaring aromatics of honey, dried apricot, candied peach, and spice. In the mouth, like nectar, coating the tongue but retaining a strong, refreshing edge from acidity. Endless finish. Viscous and pure, with great presence. It’s intense without being heavy. A -
2004 Rhys Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo County (12/25/2009)
13.8% alcohol. Opened four hours before serving but not decanted. A fairly clean bottle. Dark red color, full black cherry. A touch of brett on the nose, but it was not distracting; it added an edge of complexity. Plenty of black cherry, earth, minerals, and a distinct and attractive stemmy note. In the mouth, a gorgeous, velvety palate presence, with loads of pure and juicy cherry fruit. A rich earthiness also takes on the velvety texture, which allows the acidity to come in and liven up everything. Long, sumptuous finish. Textural and flavor delight. A-
