TNs: 96 Scavino Cannubi and 03 Tempier La Migoua

  • 1996 Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (8/11/2018)
Slow-O’d for four hours. Ruby with rusty edges. Fully developed nose of strawberry blossoms, rose petals, lavender, tar, hints of soy, earth. So much lift and freshness, I could enjoy the bouquet alone and be happy. Layers of red and dark plum on the palate cut with black cherry, strawberry, tar, and leather. Seemed thin at first but began to build in persistence with time in the glass. Brighter acidity and smoothed tannin, leading to a gentle finish of earthy red fruit laced with grip and tar. Nose blew me away this time, the palate a bit less so. (92 pts.)
  • 2003 Domaine Tempier Bandol La Migoua - France, Provence, Bandol (8/11/2018)
Opaque purple color with ruby hints. Nose of plum pits and fecund earth intermixed with higher pitched scents of lavender and floral notes. Dense layers of blackberrry, currant, and black olive over a foundation of stone and earth on the palate. Moderate acidity and somewhat relaxed tannin but structure was firm enough. Nicely harmonious finish of hearty blueberry and plum fruit mixed with bits of rock. Overt wine showing well at age 15. (91 pts.)
