The Ojai was pop and pour…at first the nose had a bit of mint and not much elase, light bodied and fresh. With some air the body got heavier and the nose developed some nice sweet cherry notes with some mild cola and great spice. A bit of funk. Reminded me a little of the KB nose. The palate revealed deep red fruit with more sweetness than acid and a medium finish. Very nice.
The Caymus 02 SS was corked…sucked
The Alpha Omega was no surprise but a quick reminder why I get their cabs shipped to me regularly. Great cab raspberry nose with some noticeable oak. Still a baby, all fat and oak, but it was still enjoyable. Already the alcohol is unobstrusive. Thick on the palate and a very long finish. This will be a great wine.
My boss and I got together because he wanted to split a bottle of Yquem. I got the 83 in 750 for a great price. This was open for 6 hours prior to dinner. (Thanks Francois for the instructions) Pretty orange in the bottle. Viscous. The nose was a blast of citrus, caramel, and stone fruits. At times reminiscent of creme caramel with honey sauce (this is a dessert I make often) The acidity was evident even in the nose. The palate was so loaded up with creamy fruit that it was hard to pick flavors appart. It evolved in the bottle and in the glass both. Went from intense apricot flavors to honey mead like flavors. As the night progressed it reminded me of everything that was good about apricot baby food. The last few sips tasted like orange hard candy. What great lceansing acidity. Im not a dessert wine person, but I had a lot of time with this (and a lot of it, my wife and the boss’ wife werent drinking so he and I killed the bottle.) Man I can still taste it. What a great way to end the night.
