A few more nice wines from last week’s drinking.
[]1990 Château La Gaffelière - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (1/1/2015)
Really alluring and captivating nose of lavender, flowers, perfume and sweet spice. Just kept sticking my nose in the glass. There is clean and supple fruit that has an almost lush texture on the palate. Some tobacco and herbs show. Good concentration and wisps of acidity. Tastes young. Could still smell and taste this wine long after it was gone. Really terrific showing. [/list]
[]1996 Château La Gaffelière - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (1/3/2015)
Some of the same pretty florals as the '90 from earlier in the week, but this one is green, too. Some red fruit and oak and cedar notes. The finish is the problem as it turns kind of green and falls off a bit. Good. That’s it. Interesting to taste the difference in a good/great vintage and a not-so great one in same night.
[*]1970 Château Léoville Las Cases - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (1/2/2015)
Four 375s over a couple nights with consistent showing. Mature aromas of cigar box, leather, and earth. Two best bottles showed greater presence of aged cherry fruit and hints of cedar. All resolved and rounded, each began to fall off after 20mins or so in the glass, but enough life to be interesting and pleasing on the palate if you like aged claret.
