  • 2005 Summerwood Grenache - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (9/18/2009)
    –popped and poured –
    – tasted non-blind over 3-4 hours –

NOSE: oak; espresso; alcohol; raspberry Twizzlers and a hint of anise.

BODY: incredibly superfine particulate matter; rustic garnet color of medium depth; medium to medium-full bodied.

TASTE: tannic; oaky; alcohol; actually paired quite well with a medium-rare NY Strip; bitter on front palate, but sweet mid-palate; concentrated red fruits; 15.6% alc.; long finish. Solid, but uninspired.

B: 50, 5, 11, 14, 6 = (86 pts.)

TASTE: sweet leather; dusty blackberries and black cherry; a bit sweet … maybe a touch of cranberry too … clearly, lots of berries here. Alcohol is well-integrated; a touch tannic right now … drink now - 3 yrs.

    – popped and poured –
    – tasted non-blind over a few hours –

NOSE: tight; sour boysenberry; light to moderate oak; cherry; garrigue; not funky; cranberry; maple oak note gains strength with time in the glass, as does a faint ruby red grapefruit note; hint of dried pasta.

BODY: some sediment present; black-ruby color of medium depth; medium-full bodied.

TASTE: initially, tannins are very drying; juicy red-purple berries; hint of alcohol taste from the 15.6% alc., as well as some spikiness on the front palate; not funky; dried herbs; not complex; hints of florals and background minerality; a bit sweet, especially on the finish; finish is short to medium-short in length (20 – 30 sec), and is of medium-light intensity; weak mid-palate; tannins do calm down after a couple of hours; drink now or over the next few years.

B: 50, 5, 12, 13, 6 =(86 pts.)
