First up was the Loring, which frankly I found dissapointing, as much as I like Brian’s wines usually. I suppose I had high expectations and this might be an outlier, but the nose and the wine both were a lot lighter than I expected. There was some nice cherry and spice to be sure, but the palate was light bodied, and the intensity that Ive come to expect wasnt there. We had a lot of wine, so I moved on. Hopefully air will do this good.
The Copains were the 04 James Berry and the 07 James Berry. The 07 obviously is a bit more in your face, with some alcohol and high tone blue berry flavor. Lots of chocolate and some oak. Still a baby and a little tight, making the fruit seem cool. The 04 was singing…same flavor profile but a much more expansive nose with more spices and flowers. Warmer both on the nose and palate and far more mouthcoating. The fruit seemed riper.
The Jannasse is a SLUT. Seriously. I havent been enamored with a wine this quickly in a long time. The nose is huge and intoxicating off the bat. What was interesting to me was the huge array of baking spices, flowers, red fruits that made it smell complex while slapping me around and spitting in my face. The palate has the most unctuous texture Ive experienced in a long time as well. Like the glycerin of a Mitolo minus the stickiness of it. Great acid in it too. Clean, long, gigantic. Clearly intense in its youth and it feels, literally feels like it will unravel different flavors in the future. Bought 4 more as soon as I got home. CANT FREAKING WAIT TO TRY THE VV
The Morgador I expected to be crappy next to the Chaupin…the nose told me I was right, at first. It was handed to me blind and at first the nose was almost dead. After a few minutes I said hesitantly…Spanish? and my buddy showed me the bottle. Id never had it and didnt expect much from the nose. Tried it, didnt get much, and left the glass on the table while I kept going bananas over the Chaupin. I grabbed the glass about 2 hours later and was almost floored by the intense nose of roasted plums, dark berries and cinnamon. The palate was just as big and brawny. As big as the Chaupin but it almost made the Chaupin seem feminine in its complexity. The Morgador was in your face and more like a hairy man but I liked it almost as much.
Great wines.
