A friend with whom i have shared many bottles in Singapore was in SF recently. We met at Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steakhouse. Food was very good but the wines stole the show. Didn’t write notes down but below are my impressions
2002 SQN Whispering E. I looked up on ebob prior to remind myself of the exact wine make-up and it had the wine labeled as “Old”. I could not disagree more. While it may have crested the top of the mountain and started the long journey down - this was a lovely bottle of wine Brilliant Deep Golden Color. Apricot/lychee/bee’s wax on the nose followed by peach/apricot/light spice on the palate. Framed with a “citrus”(?) acidity. This was my last bottle and glad i pulled cork now given that. But if i had more i would not be in a rush… Just great
1991 Togni Cabernet. Still very dark colored - no noticable bricking. Almost a liquer nose with hints of tobacco and spice. Interesting nose that evolved some over the hours but the liquer element was always there. Ripe dark fruit on the palate with licorice and tobacco notes. Fully mature tannins. Wonderful with my rib eye.
Both wines showed better than i hoped and the last sip was the best!
