TN: Two Roagna Barbarescos

TWO ROAGNA BARBARESCOS - Châteauneuf-du-Salil, Albany, NY (6/29/2025)

Salil made terrific grilled herb chicken and great sides. I brought the 2007 to compare an older Luca wine. 2007 wasn't a good choice since it was so different from 2019. Anyway, it was tasty and fun.

  • 2007 Roagna Barbaresco Pajè - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
[Double-decanted at 4pm for one hour.] Smells dark and rich immediately after decanting. Maybe I shouldn't have decanted it for an hour. Seems more mature than it should be. Smoky black fruit in the nose with a hint of licorice. Complex, medium length. By 7pm, it seems to be coming back showing more sweet cherries. I think I should try another bottle soon. (92 points)
  • 2019 Roagna Barbaresco Albesani - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
[Decanted and served.] Gorgeous nose of cherries and roses. At first there's a great wall of tannin in the mid-palate, but this softens in the glass. The underlying sweetness of the fruit comes through. This is quite stunning. (96 points)

Nice Evening.

damn, those were both awesome. I’ll post real notes tomorrow, but that was a lovely dinner and the wines both were compelling. Preferred the Albesani as well, which showed another level of aromatic depth, but that was a lot of fun to drink those two together (and really instructive).
