TN: Two Reds....(short/boring)

We tried these two reds last weekend:

  1. Ridge Zin DusiRanch BenitoDusiRanch/CanyonBlock (15.1%; 100% Zin; 43 brls; bttld March 2015; Drk: 1/15-1/21-1/23: EB) 2013: Very dark color w/ some bricking; strong bvanilla/Ridge oak rather blackberry/boysenberry/PR Zin some PR jammy bit cedary/pencilly/oldZin slightly tired nose; rather soft some PR/jammy blackberry/boysenberry/Zin/pretty ripe strong vanilla/Ridge Am.oak bit cedary/pencilly/oldZin some tired/dried out bit bcomplex/oldDusi flavor w/ light bit dried-out tannins; med.long some tired/dried out finish that tracks flavor; lost a lot of that jammy/PR Zin fruit & on the downward track but still offers up some pleasure; a somewhat tired/dried-out Paso Zin and on its last lgs; pretty much dead&gone the next morning.

  1. Lionel Faury Syrah LesHautesRibaudes IGP: Collines Rhodaniennes (13%; KermitLynch) Lionel Faury/Chavanay 2022: Very dark color; strong blackberry/Syrah fairly roasted/Rhonish slight toasty/Fr.oak/smokey slight earthy/dusty/OV rather Hermitage-like quite lovely nose; rather tart rich blackberry/Zyrah/ripe boysenberryrather roasted/Rhonish/dusty/OV/bit earthy light toasty/oak some complex rather Hermitage/StJoseph-like some complex flavor w/ modest/brisk tannins; very long blackberry/roasted/Syrah finish w/ modest tannins; a very good classic NRhone Syrah more like a StJ/Hermitage than C-R Syrah; not the soaring roasted aroma of a C-R; needs 2-6 yrs of age; quite a good NRhone Syrah at a great price. $23.50 (KK)

More steckelfurt from TheBloodyPulpit:

  1. The Faury Syrah caught my attention because it was reasonably priced for a NRhone. I was quite impressed as a great expression of NRhone at a great price.

Hey Tom, Thanks as always for your posts. Doesn’t it seem a bit unusual for a Ridge Dusi Ranch to be on its last legs at age 12? I have been following them since releases from the 1970s (admittedly, not from the very start) but shouldn’t they develop into something mature, but interesting, for 20 years or more?

Yeah… it was further along than I really expected it to be.
