Ken, I actually wanted to love these wines, and fully expected to given Parker’s high praise. Frankly, I was shocked to find what I found. I am a lover of deep, intense wines of complexity. But Clos des Papes in 2007 does not fit that description for me. To be blunt, I think Parker has blown it to a large degree. Many of the wines he gave ultra high scores to will not last the distance - my opinion, of course, but I suggests the buyer beware in this vintage.
We are definitely on the same page as far as the 2003 Clos des Papes, I never had a bottle worth drinking, out of 6 or 7 from several different sources.
Cheers
Uh, plenty of people, including Parker have made up their minds as well. I gather you think it wrong to express one’s opinion after tasting wines? And no one has written off the vintage. Far from it, I 've tasted some fabulous wines, and expect to try even more. I find it useful to read multiple opinions about wines, all I’ve done here is contribute one for others to read, and factor in however they want.
No one has ever hyped up one region, one vintage, in my 9 years ITB as much as Parker has hyped up 2007 Southern Rhone. His prerogative, but I would hardly say that others are shouting from the rooftop like him. Even Coelho could not drink the VJ the other night with me, and he has also been hyping up the wines.
It is not even close.
2009 should be a great vintage, I expect the new 110 point scale to be announced in advance of that.
