No, it’s not big, it’s not flashy, and it’s not worth more than my cable bill. However, it is an incredibly beautiful expression of Pinot noir. I’ve had a bit of a cold streak with underperforming Burgs as of late, but this just kills it. It’s an assertive wine with bracing acidity and earth, yet perfectly balanced by some salient red fruits. This wine is so pure and unadulterated, I’m on cloud nine. I also found that this wine paired exceptionally well with a lazy afternoon and The Ocean Blue. 92 pts.
I have a couple of the '02 Ecard Peuillets that have been calling my name and so were recently moved to a more convenient location. Hope they show even half as well as your '98!
I thought I read that Maurice Ecard had passed away in the mid 2000s and due to the f’d up inheritance laws the Domaine was sold. If anyone can shed light on this… BTW-His son Michel has his own label.
Nice one Mark.
I’ve posted numerous notes here on Ecards from the mid-90s over the past few years.
Terrific wines cross the board.
Often produced a reaction for me similar to yours here.
Still have some '96 of the P to drink soon.
Cheers.
Glad to hear the wine showed so well. I can relate to the experience of going through a cold streak and starting to doubt whether Burgundy is worth all the time and money I spend on it. There are certainly other regions that (for me) deliver a more predictable stream of happiness - but unfortunately the highs are not as high.
But then I get one of those bottles that makes me feel: THIS is what I’m chasing for! Kinda makes me sad, because I realize the hunt will continue. And I love it the most when it’s an older bottle like this your Ecard I picked up for a reasonable price. Cheers!
