TN: Strohmeier Rot#6 Steirland...(short/boring)

Found this unusual red at Gommer’s Mid-Town, so had to try it:

  1. Strohmeier Rot#6 Steirland/Austria (Trauben Liebe un Zeit; 12%; 25% BlauerWildbacher/75% Zweigelt; Jenny & Francois Slctn; www.JennyAndFrancois.com; Monika Caha Slctn) NV (L0515): Dark color; very strong plummy/Mourv-like/boysenberry/black cherry cola rather earthy/loamy/bit coarse nose; rather soft/flat quite earthy/loamy/rustic/coarse strong plummy/Mourv-like/boysenberry/black cherry cola flavor w/ light coarse tannins; med. rather soft/flat bit metallic/tangy strong plummy/Mourv-like/boysenberry rather earthy/loamy/coarse finish w/ light soft/coarse tannins; lots of earthy/plummy character of Zweigelt w/ a coarseness from the BlauerWildbacher; reminds a lot of Lodi AlicanteBouschet; rather interestin if rustic/coarse red; pricey at $34.00 (GomersMT)

A wee BloodyPulpit:

  1. BlauerWildbacher is a vinifera variety native to Styria in Austria. Apparently related to Blaufrankisch but started as a seedling from GouaisBlanche. BlauerWildbacher is the grape most used in making Schilcher wine, a still-fermenting/fizzy/very acidic rose from Styria. Very much an acquired taste…which, thru hard/diligent work, I acquired. Clearly a grape that should be being planted all up&down the coast of Calif.

Franz Strohmeier is a good friend of mine, he came to our monthly tastings for years, but now I haven´t seen him for some time.
He makes outstanding (rosé) Schilcher and Schilcher Sekt (sparkling) - certainly among the best … however I was never a fan of this Styrian specialities.
Cannot remember having tasted a full red from him … but I can imagine how it is … exactly as Tom described above … perfect for people who really like it - and fine for certain dishes!
