Pontet-Canet 1999:
A panoply of aromas emerge from this rather disappointing bottle, of course the most notable of these aromatics were not very pleasing. Think green, weedy flavors, old cigars and a touch of bramble. Continuing on, and to more unfortunate circumstances, the wine’s texture and mouth-feel were chewy and firm, displaying more of the green and weedy notes from the nose, along with some toasted oak, burnt Bing cherries and licorice. No me gusta is all I can muster to myself as I force another sip. Deciding to give the wine a few moments to compose itself (a futile exercise) I humor myself with other diversions for forty-five minutes or so. The next glass prompts mostly introspection, rather than imbibing- how much of this wine do I own? Bowden arrives ten minutes later, and being a generous, decent friend, I decide it best to inflict the damage on him under the guise of a friendly pre-dinner drink. He is also less-than-impressed. No me gusta, he offers, pouring his unfinished glass down the sink (bilingual conversations are very common in my house BTW). I know what he is thinking- how much of this does he have? That’s a shame, I think to myself as I realize the quantity. Oh well. We went to dinner and drank a lot of nice wines . . . but this one wasn’t one of them. 74 points
Wow, do you suppose it was a bad bottle, or are all of the [insert mystery number here] bottles in your cellar likely the same?
OUCH!
I hope it was a bad bottle as I have a few. Never had one, might be time to pop one and see what the deal is.
I doubt this was a bad bottle. Just a bad wine. Or in a terrible place.
If your place is that bad, why didn’t you go over to Bowden’s?
That is full of suck.
Lucky me, I had a rocking good bottle of 2003 PC on Saturday with Dr. Spikes.
Scant consolation, I’m sure, since the wine sucked, but it made for a very funny story. Bonus points for the use of “panoply”, too.
Me gusta mucho. ![]()
Where’s Keith? This sounds like old school BDX and therefore maybe right up his alley? No spoofalated fruit bombs with this one it sounds like.
BTW, the 03 was killer and is still going strong! Drinking a little of it this evening with some veal chops.
