Last night we hit Tony’s Pizza in North Beach for our further quest for the best pizza in the bay area. A terrific entrant into the SF Pizza wars…yeah for us. Great time for all of us and we even took a WSET quiz that Ed Kurtzman had taken earlier in the day. WIth no prep, Traci and I passed that quiz…you only needed 55% but I think we got 12 or 13 which was just enough.

2006 Pala Vermentino di Sardegna Crabilis - Italy, Sardinia, Vermentino di Sardegna
Purchased off the list at Tony’s Pizza Napoletana for $29. A very nice pleasant bottle of Vermentino. Nice light minerality, white flowers, pear and lime zest. Short finish and decent palate presence. It did pair well with the bruschetta and spicy calamari. (85 pts.) -
2007 Château de Vaudieu Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
This is just a terrific CdP blanc. I believe this is mostly Grenache blanc. Plenty of weight but crisp and light at the same time. Pretty fruit, lemon/citrus, white flowers and a little honey and tropical fruit. Medium length finish, terrific texture/palate weight…around $24 per bottle at K&L Wines and worth it for that price. (91 pts.) -
2007 La Pietra di Tommasone Ischia - Italy, Campania, Ischia
$35 or so off the list. First bottle slightly corked. Second bottle was terrific. Slightly waxy/oil texture with sea shells, almond skin, citrus rind…very nice wine. (87 pts.) -
1999 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Opened at dinner and could have used a little decanting time but still a terrific CdP. Great nose of dark fruits, earth, spice. Palate was terrificly weighted, with some grippy tannins with black and red fruits, provencal spice, a hint of anise and earth with very nice acidity. Finish was medium long. I could have sipped this all night…terrific. 93+/100 (93 pts.)
