TN: Outpost Grenache 2006 WTF

Well, the color seemed right…but it had no nose. None. Like smelling a glass of water. After some time it did show a little funk and light berries. The palate was well, weak. as it warmed up to room temp, it had some nice raspberry flavors but barely. I mean this was not at all unpleasant, but I expected Outpost…as in huge…

Last time I had this wine was from bottle up at Outpost last fall. It sounds like maybe the one you had just needed some more air. When I had it it was very flamboyant and perfume like, extremely aromatic.

I have three resting right now and probably wont touch them for another year or two.

I had this just a over a week ago and air really helped it but I liked it across the evening. Such a nice change of pace having complexity and fruit without the extraction and huge-ness so common in wines of the type. A great effort.

Ill have to crack another one. It wasnt offensive at all, but I really could smell very little in it and I drank it over two hours. We shall see.

IMO, Outpost;s worst wine, year in and year out.

Thanks for the note. I have not tried this but I must say your note makes me intrigued. It reads like it is a very young wine. This is what I would expect of a young CdP … so I wonder what 6-8 years will do to this.

I dunno…not much loss anyway if the other two are watery…I really like the cabs and the zin, so I just wont be buying more grenache. I do have a hard time believing that if there was nothing wrong with this bottle it will gain significant life. We will find out I guess.

We have the 07 on deck for tonight.

Embarrased to say that I’ve already gone through 4 or 5 of these as I don’t think time will improve them much. All had more power on the nose than your’s did, but mine didn’t have much mouthfeel or weight either. simple raspberry and vanilla with a touch of spice. There doesn’t seem to be much tannin or acid either, so I can’t imagine these will hold up too long.

wow… [drinkers.gif] [notworthy.gif]

Yeah, I’m not sure if I’m retarded for drinking them all young, or buying as many as I did without tasting first. Either way, I’m still a retard. [shrug.gif]

Wow…just saw this. I have to say I agree with the note. I bought 3 and I could barely get a thing off of the first bottle. Not much on the nose, very light on the palate. Don’t know what I’m going to do with the other 2. (Whew, I thought I was the only one who felt this way.)

Not even strong enough for Sangria…

It’s a wine that sees no new oak - all 1 to 5 year old barrels, 50% whole cluster fermentation. That being said, the 06 was pretty light and IMO was by far the weakest of the 05-07 years. The 07 has a lot more concentration and is a huge step up from the 06.

The vines are Alban 2 clone which is reportedly plant material from the Rayas Vyd in CdP. I really like the Grenache.

Disclaimer - used to work at Outpost.

I have only had 2 vintages (2004, 2005) but I was not impressed by either wine and would not purchase them for my store.

Disclaimer: I love Outpost Zin and do enjoy the Cabs.

not particularly special. A bit of candied fruit but not much complexity… nothing wrong with it… just not much going on. How much is this wine btw?

From the list, with shipping, I paid almost 50. OUCH!!! [emot-pwn.gif]

at least the cabs and PS aren’t too shabby for the price.
