TN: Ojai Roussanne BienNacido '13...(short/boring)

Tried this last night:

  1. OjaiVnyd Roussanne BienNacidoVnyd/SantaMariaVlly (13.5%) 2013: Med.gold color; rather pear/appley very light honeysuckly/Rouss very light pencilly/oak rather pinched/restrained nose; fairly tart/lean/tight light pear/appley very light pencilly/oak fairly austere flavor; med.long austere/very tart/lean slight nutmeg/pencilly/oak light appley/pear finish; more like early Qupe Marsanne than a Roussanne; a rather tart/tight/pinched/angular/austere Roussanne. $23.40

A wee BloodyPulpit:

  1. This wine is pretty much in keeping w/ Adam’s new style of white wines: lower alcohol/higher acidity/earlier harvesting. It lacks richness & texture & uncuousness. Not particularly a pleasure to drink. But then neither is young Chablis. I suspect that this wine will develop into something pretty interesting in 4-8 yrs. But that’s just a guess.

Wow! My guess is that they must have just bottled this . . . To me, this variety needs to spend a bit more time in older oak to develop a bit more before putting into bottle . . .

Will be curious to compare this with Qupes - though this one seems a bit more ‘reasonably priced’ than the other one perhaps?

Cheers!

I was a little surprised when I saw this released so young as well. Thanks for the note- I was interested in how it would be showing.

Hmmmmm - Tom’s original note makes this sound almost like a ‘backwards’ wine that need time in bottle to flesh out. Luckily for the variety, that’s generally what happens over time - it does tend to fatten up, and the richness gets more pronounced over time. Perhaps that’s what will happen here? I guess only time will tell . . .

Gonna need to get my hands on one to try . . .

Cheers
