TN: N.V. Baldwin Merlot Proprietor's Reserve (USA, New York)

N.V. Baldwin Merlot Proprietor’s Reserve - USA, New York (9/4/2009)
We went to a local informal restaurant that usually has some decent wines by the glass. Unfortunately, they are doing a NYS wine promotion focusing on the wines of this producer. Amy and I were both having dishes that were not white-wine friendly. White usually being a better bet with NYS wines. The waiter said he had tasted this and it was “quite good”. He even convinced us to go for a bottle at $20 rather than purchase by the glass. It’s just as well that I don’t know where he lives.

The nose has hints of the cherry and chocolate typical of Merlot, but there’s an added component of stewed cabbage and V-8 Juice that really doesn’t work here. On the palate, the wine has a definite, if off-putting, tingle on the tongue along with some sweet cherry candy that seems like artificial flavor. Since I was able to drink most of a glass without puking, I gave it a score in the 60s rather than the 50s. Not recommended. (65 pts.)

That winery is owned by Alec. Daniel is vineryard manager. William is the winemaker. Stephen is the unpaid consultant.

Yikes Ken,

Where did Amy and yourself go, I’ll be sure to avoid or order beer…

It’s just a local place called Four Corners Luncheonette. The food is nice and the place is comfortable. And there usually is something worth drinking there even if it’s nothing special to post about. It might just be some Rosemount Shiraz, but this was . . . more notable!
