Tried this very rare wine last night at Pig+Fig:
- Meyer-Fonne Le Samson Syrah VdF (13.5%; MeBalP; Kermit Lynch/Berkeley) Francois & Felix Meyer/Katzenthal/Alsace 2020: Very dark color; very strong rather Rhonish/smokey/roasted rather earthy/rustic bit toasty/Fr.oak slight blackberry/boysenberry/Syrah slight Hermitage-like bit Spanish/Sytah-like not a lot of bright Syrah fruit some c-c/peppery very interesting nose; quite tart/tangy/acidic very earthy/dusty/rustic some blackberry/boysenberry/Syrah rather rough/structured fairly c-c/black pepper flavor w/ ample rough/coarse tannins; very long/lingering rough/structured finish that mimics flavor; a big/structured somewhat rustic/coarse Syrah that resembles Syrah from the Languedoc or Hermitage; quite an interesting Syrah that needs much age; nothing that speaks particularly of Alsace. $69.00 (K-L)

- Kermit-Lynch recently offered up a special case discount for the latest release from Meyer-Fonne. I immediately noticed that it contained a Syrah from Alsace, so knew I had to try it. Since Syrah is not an approved variety for Alsace (yet), it had to be labeled as a Vin de France.
I didn’t know what to expect from this wine. Thought it might be a bit high-toned a bit like a PinotNoir. It was not. It is a big/rugged/structured expression of Syrah that I suspect will be very interesting w/ 5-10 yrs of age. LeSamson is a very appropriate name for it.
