TN: Hundred Acre Ancient Way Vertical 2 Year Review

HUNDRED ACRE ANCIENT WAY VERTICAL 2 YEAR REVIEW - Wentworth-by-the-Sea (12/14/2012)

We decided to revisit the Hundred Acre Summer’s Way vertical tasting we did in 2010. It is interesting the order of preference changed completely and each wine had truly evolved (both good and bad) quite a bit in 24 months. A great evening with friends and delicious food in contrast to the events in CT. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those impacted by such a horrible and inexplicable act.

  • 2007 Hundred Acre Vineyard Shiraz Summer’s Block Ancient Way - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
We has this as part our Hundred Acre vertical tasting on Friday night. The nose was pretty subdued, but when really swirled we coaxed out a blend of blackberry and blueberry mixed with a hint of allspice (?). After the first sip what everyone remarked on was the silky smoothness. Layers of flavor included dark berry compote and a hint of vanilla and coconut. The finish was easily 45+ seconds. Hands down the WOTN for the group. (97 pts.)
  • 2005 Hundred Acre Vineyard Shiraz Summer’s Block Ancient Way - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
We had this as part of our Hundred Acre vertical on Friday night. This wine was sitting in a great spot. The nose was a very nice combination of black raspberries, sweet plums, and blackberry. The first taste was a replica of the nose. The only use which nicked points was the lack of layered qualities the 2007 had in abundance. A really nice bottle of wine but not the exquisite qualities that you find in those mind blowing wines you get now and then. (94 pts.)
  • 2006 Hundred Acre Vineyard Shiraz Summer’s Block Ancient Way - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
We had this as part of our Hundred Acre vertical tasting on Friday night. Over the past two years this wine has developed a strong alcoholic component - both on the nose and palate. It was remarkably sweet compared to the 2005 and 2007. It was a beautiful bottle of wine, but tasted lie the 2005 on steroids slightly over the top. This bottle was the least favorite of the group. (92 pts.)
