If I see a deal I will buy some, but about the only wine I look for is the Steiner Hund.
But Steiner Hund is a Riesling!
I have come to like Nikolaihofs wines from the vineyards Vom Stein and Im Weingebirge better. They are situated a bit away from the Danube, on the south side of the river facing north, so they are a bit cooler than the vineyards in Loiben, Weissenkirchen and Spitz. Also the vineyards in Spitzer Graben are cooler. I have tasted some wines from Högl in Vießling that are quite good.
I’m also quite fond of the wines of Prager in Weißenkirchen. Especially Grüner Veltliner from the vineyard Zwerithaler (which they lease from the monastry in Melk). The vines were plantet around 1910, and it is a very small plot producing approx.1000 bottles pr. year (if I remember correctly).
Yes it is. But it remains the only Nikolaihof I pursue.
I feel that Nikolaihof does not have the quality it used to have. The change may have happened when Christine Saahs and her husband left the winemaking to their son. I may be wrongh of course, but I seem to remember that the wines were better when I visited them (multiple times) in the period 2002 - 2010.
The Nikolaihof guesthouse (run by Christine Saahs sister I think) is wonderful though. Great place to stay if you are in Wachau/Kamptal/Kremstal.
I really liked the first Vinothek but every one I tried after that disappointed.
