TN: Grignolino

I’ve long suspected I like Grignolino a lot but we only see them every now and then in our monopoly. Today is a happy day since we just got one after a long time without any. Montalbera Grignè Grignolino d’Asti 2023 is seriously yummy. Very pale colour as is typical. Lovely scent of roses and red berries and even slight spiciness (cinnamon maybe?) that I’m pretty sure isn’t oak. Delightfully light bodied and high in acidity and decent tannins, too, but this does seem pretty tame. I look at the label and see it has 13,5% which is pretty massive compared to the previous Grignolinos I’ve had so that must explain it. Friendly style of G: if the previous Gs were ones I can only really see me liking them, this one probably has wider appeal. Fun stuff. At 16€ it’s certainly in the “buy again” territory for me even though I did prefer our previous G with its painful acidity and tannins because I’m weird like that.

No oak there. They use stainless steel for this wine.

I’ve also very much enjoyed Grignolinos from Migliavacca and Gaudio / Bricco Mondalino. Definitely a grape that suits being made in a ‘lively’ table wine style.

The 2023 (and 2022) Idlewild Grignolino is a beauty. Floral, fresh juicy raspberry, some herbal notes. Nice acidity and sweet tannins. 12% ABV. Perfect on a warm summer night. Pairs with just about anything. We had it with marinated braised chicken thighs.
