This one, according to their site, is made by Berserker @Macario_Montoya, head winemaker for Roots Run Deep.
Bottom line, for the money, this delivers in a very significant way. It smells like Cabernet. It tastes like Cabernet. For a relatively young wine, it is open and pleasing. Tannins are fine and modest, but there is a definite structure. I really enjoy the earthy, loamy notes on the nose. The varietal fruit is up front and ready to go.
This is a well-made wine that is made for drinking now. Buy with confidence if you are looking for a pleasing Cabernet that is ready to go and gives real varietal character and satisfaction at a very reasonable price.
I saw the heading and asked myself, “I wonder if Macario is still making this?”
Thanks!
Trying to remember the vintage where I bought a case in SD. Maybe 07?
Wine was good for 6-7 years from vintage.
That was my intro to this wine and it was a pretty good QPR at $15/16 back then. I didn’t know Macario was the winemaker. I think I saw this at Costco so will have to try it out. Been loving his 2016 Steel Plow Grenache; shoulda bought more.
I know I bought a case of 2012 too. Ran thru those rapido.
I wasn’t very impressed by a recent bottle from costco, don’t recall vintage- in general non descript and soft/ muddled. A previous vintage was far more delineated and interesting.
Parker turned me onto this wine back in the 2012 vintage.
It was. That was the first vintage that I started buying. There were rumors (unfounded) that Screaming Eagle declassified juice was in the mix.
Nate is correct in that this is a yearly case buy and '21 is stellar. Here at Kroger with 25% a mix six, they are $18 a bottle.
Sadly, the last bottle from that 07 case was a dud in 2017.
I just checked my local wine shop and they have the 2020 for $32. I think I need to look around a bit.
This was available at my local Costco for $25, marked down from $50.
$24 at Binnys for the 2020 and 2021.
No way it was $50. Must be a different bottling. The one I posted was the “Napa County.”
Winery list price is $30.
Good stuff for the money. $21.99 at Total Wine.
2012 was such a good year that nearly everyone made decent stuff. Producers had to really try to make a bad wine that vintage.
Its the same- at least my store. It was brought in already “marked down” so never actually sold at the higher price- I don’t recall $50, but it was definitely on “sale” from day 1.
$20 at my Costco so I’ll give it a whirl.
