TN: Dry River Estate, Martinborough, Viognier 2013

Pale, youthful straw green/yellow in colour.
Very floral, lifted aromatics of citrus, apricots, honey, baked fruits and a little spice.
Full bodied, with a rich fat texture, almost oily…in a good way and a touch of sweetness. Flavours of honey, spices, rose water, ripe stone-fruit, apricots and fresh citrus. Acidity keeps the focus. The finish goes on and on. Restrained and powerful should, improve with some time in the cellar. 93+

Hi Wayne, nice TN. Here’s my recent note on a 2011:

  • 2011 Dry River Viognier - New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough (7/12/2014)
Colour watery lemon. A nose of citrus, cinnamon, spice and pears, showing the alcohol a little. A sweet entry, with quite a bit of sweetness, unctuousness and ripeness across the palate. Rich with deep fruit weight, the alcohol (14%) noticeable but not overpowering. However, compared with a top Condrieu a little soft and lacking detail and complexity. Not a bad wine, well made and enjoyable. Drink in the next 3-4 years. (89 pts.)

Hmmmmmmm in that case I’m glad to have the 2013. [wow.gif]

Or maybe they’re for earlier drinking? When they’re fresher?

Are you a Condrieu drinker Wayne?

Thanks for the notes guys. Though I’m not sure I need another no doubt difficult-to-find-wine that I now want to try

Don’t worry mate I can tell you where to buy it. [cheers.gif]

yes I am Howard, Viognier is one of my favourite grape varieties, thought good ones are hard to find, even from Condrieu. Thats a good question, use to be that it’s was when they were young and fresh but I prefer mine with a little age, I think it improves the texture and adds richness to the flavour profile. How this one will age, I’m not 100% sure but the base material seems pretty good. The alc is high at 14.5%…but was not out of balance to me.

I didn’t think there was such a thing…
