TN: Drouhin Pucelles 2005

lovely wine that tightened with air, very pretty ripe fruit, citrus and lemon zest, fills the mouth as it expands, a fine drink w good length. Haven’t had much from Pucelles so I can’t comment re the terroir, but it is a very enjoyable white Burgundy. Solid, not headspinning, will keep, perhaps improve, but not a bottle I will seek out. Resting up for dinner w Jerry this weekend.

I’m finding Drouhin whites just a touch oaky for my tastes. No experience with their Pucelles (have never even seen a bottle), any observations on this front?

I am fairly oak tolerant. It is there, not dominant.

The 05 Drouhin Meursault Perrieres is a very good wine; not in the top tier class with Coche and Roulot but in an 05 MP tasting a couple years ago it held its own with most of the others.

Yes rest up for lots of food and wine on Saturday - it’s going to be a good night. I’m starting prepping today.

About eight years ago I got to taste older Montrachets with Laurence Jobard, the winemaker then, and Michel Rolland. The '95s from north and south parts of the vineyard were great. A friend organized a Montrachet day for Michel and I got to tag along. I think the Drouhin whites develop very nicely

Fortune favored me on an odd lot of '83 Drouhin at the minimum bid - 2 bottles of Charmes-Chambertin and 1 bottle of Echezeaux. The Charmes-Chambertin is fantastic and the Echezeaux is next up to drink with our group. Wouldn’t mind more of their stuff because it ages so well.

Interesting you say that. Ex-domaine '85 Drouhins were opened at the Chicago Paulee earlier this year, and some of those who went told me that the wines had pretty much fallen apart.

That’s interesting. The bottle I had was fully resolved but still nice. It was certainly not powerful, and might be described as a more feminine profile, but no where near falling apart.

I got lucky when somebody did not show up for a ridiculous tasting mounted by Dave page and John Ritchie (pardon spelling errors) a few years back. I got invited at the last minute. The tasting included Burgundies from the Doris Duke collection going back to the 20s. My favorite was the 61 Romanee St Vivant from Drouhin, along with a special auction cuvee of Domaine Drouhin 1993.

I’ve had excellent luck with buying '83 Drouhins at auction over the years though prices have certainly escalated.

Adrian - do you know if the ex-domaine wines came from the Sotheby’s auction where they had a bunch of ex-domaine stuff? I picked up some Corton at that auction and in the back of my mind always wondered if the '03 heat wave might have affected the wine. Maybe I’ll open a bottle much sooner than I had planned. Which '85 Drouhins were opened?

I never bought much Drouhin white for just that reason but I had read they’ve dialed back the new oak in their more recent vintages. Have you not found that to be the case?

The invitation to the event says Corton, CdlR, and Bonnes Mares. I don’t know if those were indeed the wines that were opened, nor do I know the provenance, except I was told they were ex-domaine.

then I’m surprised and a little concerned since those are usually among their top and most age worthy wines. I’ll open one of my 1995 Cortons some time soon.

Jay, you & I should keep an open conversation via PM about lots we’re considering bidding on so we don’t cost each other money. We seem to have similar targets with Burgundy and Riesling, and we favor the same websites.

Good question. I haven’t bought any since maybe 2008 vintage, but wines I’ve tasted at Paulee have been very good - though things always taste good when poured by the winemaker [wow.gif]
