TN: Dirty & Rowdy does Italian!

Dirty & Rowdy Wines are good with virtually any food, recently had a couple of very nice bottles. These wines never seem to disappoint and usually point to even better days ahead. With a couple of delicious Italian inspired meals.

2015 Dirty & Rowdy Old Vine Mourvedre Evangelho Vineyard: Opened and decanted for an hour, this was banging from the moment it was opened. Fruity, floral spicy nose that you could smell all day. Dark cherry, blackberry fruit, floral yet earthy notes along with plenty of spice (sweet cassia). Medium body, moderate acidity and some tannins on the finish complete the package. If you have a couple there is certainly no harm opening one now.
We had the wine with an entree of Baked Ziti with chard and pancetta. Lovely match of food and wine.

2016 Dirty & Rowdy Old Vine Mourvedre Enz Vineyard: Decanted 2 hours. Nose of red and black fruit, cedar-graphite and a touch of smoke. Flavors of red cherry and currant, earth, spice and bits of flowers and smoke. This bottle is holding back some flavors but is not closed, mainly still just primary but very enjoyable. Medium bodied, very concentrated with nice acidity this wine will be really something with some additional aging. I have a couple more and will wait a few more years. Reminds me a lot of the 2013 D&R Antle Vineyard which will be a very special bottle with time.
D&R and Homemade Pizza is always a good match and this night was no exception.

Looks delicious, Tom! I am “new” to D&R but the wines I have had so far have been terrific. It will be difficult for me to age 'em ; ) Thanks for the notes…and the pics!

Cheers,
JP

I hear ya John, most D&R wine are great at any age. The 2016 Enz is packed and tasty but could use more time to really show it’s stuff.

Tom

Thanks so much for the report and the beautiful pairings. Both Enz and Evangelho carry a lot of presence and great acidity that I think they are awesome pairings with Italian food.

I agree, the '16 Enz needs a bit of a longer decant and has time before hitting its peak. The newly released 2018 Enz is more open than both our '16 and '17 Enz.

John- Thanks for the kind words! I agree - they can be tough to keep in the cellar as most of the wines show really really well out of the gate

Hi Hardy, yup the acid is what makes the match with red sauce and your wines have that in spades. Also the earthy notes in Mourvèdre brings out flavors in the sauce. Although they taste very different the earthy notes (and acid) in Barbara work essentially the same.
