TN: Cameron Hughes Lot 140 Chalk Hill Cab

In the spirit of the olympics and you Tea Party folk, this bad boy is ALL about American Oak. Vanilla extract and, well, more vanilla extract.

Its real dark and shows hints of great fruit (through the oak). OK, to be fair, it’s as young as the girl in Chris’ dream last night, but still…

See what happens when your drinking buddy grabs the laptop when you tend to your 4 year old!

I’d love to rate this wine but in all fairness it’s impossible unless you’re Jay Miller.

Lumber.

That is all.

So, I’ll like it?

And Pobega.

Probably not. American oak and youth…

Left the wine out overnight.
Wine is no bueno
Oak won’t recede and now there is heat.

Even Tex’s appetite for this beast will be tamed upon a whiff.

Will revisit my other bottle in 2019

The local Costco has these in for $13 so I picked one up to give it another shot along with some Costco prime ribeyes.

First, the steaks were really good, showing again the variability of their prime meats.

We decanted the wine for about two hours… It was really quite good, much better than the prior experience. Hard to say whether it was travel shock on the first one, that we had this one with steaks, bottle variation, taster variation, or what. Where the first one was completely closed, this one was readily drinkable now.

Nice color and concentration. A little lacking in complexity, but nice, true Sonoma Cab flavor profile. The oak that seemed so prominent on the first bottle was much reduced here. Really hard to beat this at $13. I’d pick up a half dozen or a case to see how it matures or simply to serve at a party.

One of you clearly has the palate of a yak. I expect a great sequence of traded insults, brickbats and really obnoxious emoticons. Then insults of each others mothers, children and favorite baseball teams.

Otherwise what are we really here for?

Chris’ worse trait is that he comes over to my house and drinks all my wine.

I would say he has the palate of a yak, but he really liked the 2003 Lagier Meredith Syrah I popped on Thursday night, so his palate is apparently more highly evolved than a yak.

He may just need to try it again. After all, the first tasting note on the board is a combination of his and my thoughts. That bottle may have been a bit travel shocked.
