TN: Burgundy Paulée with the Chevaliers du Tastevin

BURGUNDY PAULÉE WITH THE CHEVALIERS DU TASTEVIN - Chez Mike, East Greenbush, NY (9/10/2023)

This was a Paulée of the Albany-Capital Region chapter of La Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. Thus, everyone brought their own wines, nominally one bottle per person.

The dinner was held at Chez Mike in East Greenbush, NY. As alway, the food was very good.

Since this was a Paulée, there were no organized flights. I've grouped the wines in relation to the food courses.

Photos and more details can be found on my website.

Salmon Rillette with Cucumber Dill Salad.

Seared Scallops with Melon Quinoa "Tabbouleh", Vanilla Sauce, and Pink Peppercorn.

Chicken Thigh Coq Au Vin with Mushroom, Cippolini, Bacon, and Gruyere Noodle Kugel

Roasted Veal Loin with Truffle, Corn Succotash, Sweet Potato, Thyme Veal Jus.

Nettle Meadow Kunik with Roasted Plums, Walnuts, Honey Drizzle.

  • 1993 Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Mature earthy nose of dried cherries and herbs. Fully mature, but drinking beautifully. I wish I had more of these. Long, complex, a wine of meditation. (95 points)
  • 2001 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Big rich nose of red fruit. Still young with ripe cherries and a hint of mint or something like that. (93 points)

Triple Chocolate Tart with Whipped Cream.

Another wonderful evening of camaraderie and great food and wines.

Thanks Ken for the notes on an interesting line up. The Bouchard Genevrieres sounds especially successful and another documented Bertagna dud!

I really need to buy more wines from Marc Colin. His children’s wineries get all the press, but these wines are excellent and are better priced.

I really love Bouchard’s whites. I own more Perrieres than Genevrieres, but they both are great.

Great notes! One thing you may find interesting about this wine:

Defaix releases wines when they are “ready”. The 1er crus sit in tank for ~8 years before being bottled, and then spend many more years in bottle before being sold. I think this wine was released by the domaine ~3 years ago. So yes, they are “well-stored.”

One of my favorite producers!

I can’t find a good, well-priced source for them anymore! Official importer’s pricing is high and seems like the gray-market importers haven’t offered any for a while. I was jonesing for some 2020s, but didn’t receive a single e-mail offer from the places I’m subscribed.

That explains a lot. Thanks.

I bought these from Vinopolis about a year ago. Looks like HDH has the 2020 for about the same price I paid for the 2019.

Sounds like more people need to bring reds next time!

It’s hard to coordinate at a paulee. In this case, I was bringing 3 bottles to cover two friends and I knew one other friend that I would sit with was bringing a white. So I brought 2 reds and one white. Another couple brought one of each. The other two guys were singles. Anyway, this includes wines from our table and some wines that friends brought by insisting I taste them. (It’s a tough life.)
