TN: Bouchard Pere et Fils Nuits-St-Georges “Les Porrets Saint Georges” 1er Cru 2011

Took a gamble on this as it was on sale at a good price on Millesima, had a bit of age to it, Bouchard is typically reliable if perhaps a little unexciting (at least for their domaine bottlings), and I like the Gouges rendition from this plot albeit from a different section.

This was flat out weird though. Opened smelling like celery stems. Thought I’d give it a bit of air, but that just evolved into nutmeg, lamb and Moroccan spice (?paprika). Struggled to finish a glass, nutmeg is really not my favourite flavour even in desserts. About the only good thing going for it was it was acidic enough to cut the ridiculous amount of fat (butter, cream, cheese and a stonking good USDA Prime OP Rib) I used to cook dinner. 12.5%. Rolled the dice and dropped a pair of ones on this one I think.

I don’t know if it’s a bad wine or if the wine is faulty as I haven’t come across this set of aromas before. Anyone able to advise?

  1. I wouldn’t buy them at any price.

2011 is a weird vintage. Mix of immature fruit aromas and sugars sometimes getting up but phenolic ripeness never getting there IMO.

True minefield. An inferior 2007.

2011s are awful and even with the best of circumstances, I find Bouchard reds rather unremarkable.

I had very good experience with 2011 from my favorite and trusted producers. Having recently tried a grand cru from 2011 from a different producer, it was extremely underwhelming. It wasn’t weird or green, it was just a weak an uninspiring wine.
