TN: An excellent Villages-level Burgundy ...

  • 2011 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille Vigne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin (7/7/2014)
Light, bright ruby colour. The nose opens with a little reduction. A high-toned, lifted and pure bouquet of bright, red fruits: sweet red cherry, red currant, pomegranate and a little cranberry. A lovely nose. A sweet, pure entry to the palate. Downright delicious! Vibrant and vivid, fresh with sparkling acid cut and drive. A little below medium weight, but driven and focussed. Satiny texture, lovely rounded, fine grained tannins. Surprisingly long. At this young age, more Chambolle than Gevrey, a really classy Villages. Classically structured and proportioned. All red (and some darker) berries on the palate, no sense of earth, underbrush or spice. No hint of green. Pure red and dark cherries, raspberries, mulberies, with some darker berries, perhaps black berries, glossy, with some minerals on the back end. The fruit here for 10 years cellar time, easily. I’m tempted to say that this wine is better than the excellent '10. (92 pts.)

Nice Howard.
Many thanks for the note.

Thanks Howard

More evidence that 2011 is a very good vintage. It seems that a lot of people see it as another 2004, which plays well into our hands. All the more for you and me!

Always a great village wine not far behind his 1er and better in a good vintage.

Agree 100%. Suspect a lot of people will look back on this and kick themselves for missing out on an excellent vintage.

It better be good for $70 plus a bottle

I tasted 11’ Fourrier GC VV and Aux Moines back to back and thought there was a big gap in quality between the two, ended up just spent all the money on Aux Moines even though GC VV was pretty good for a village level but 11’ Aux Moines was sensational.

Chui, thanks, that’s good feedback, you definitely get a better idea tasting side-by-side. I have not tried the 2011 CAM yet. The Fourrier '11s were sharply allocated here and I wasn’t able to get as many as I wanted, so I need to preserve my stocks!

Best, Howard

this was my thought as well…I think $70 is the low entry point anymore, often $80+…and that introduces a lot of competition from the 1er ranks

I adore this bottling from Fourrier, easily the best value in the lineup historically IMO…but that was when it cost $50-55 :frowning:
