TN: a good value South African Red!

2010 Porcupine Ridge, Syrah/Voignier; Boekenhoutskloof, Coastal Region, South Africa
smoke, wood, woodspice but with some soft floral notes, damsons, violets, cassis, black plum, a touch leather, simple, well made, easy drinking, some poise, earth and spice underly the fruit that blends ripeness and herby freshness nicely. Herbs, iron ore, rocks, garrique. Nice length and some concentration hints at the quality of the fruit, but it is much more open and expressive than the top wines which need serious bottle age. Whilst this will certainly improve, it can certainly be drunk now as it doesn’t feel dominated by tannins, but those that are present are soft. Green and black pepper finish, intermingled with black fruits and plum. Very nice little wine. ****(**?) or [4+4.5+4+4=16.5/20]

If you enjoyed the Porcupine Ridge, You should try their other lower proced line. The Wolftrap. The red is 65% Syrah, 32% Mourvedre, and 3% Viognier. Here in boston it sells for under 10 dollars.

Also the Wolftrap White 2011 just was voted “superquaffer” of the year by the Platter guide.

If you ever want to splurge, try the Chocolate block which is a fruit bomb

I know Marc Kent’s wines like the back of my hand!! I buy his top wines all the time.

Choc Block is a bit vintage variable for me! But annoyingly, can’t find the Wolftrap anywhere that I frequent! Porcupine is about as low as I can go…

I did a quick search on wine searcher and found a few locations in the UK that sell them at as low as 8.50 US/btl.

I recently bought 6 of the 2006 semillion that are just beginning to show their prime. Since no-one knows a lot about obscure SA wines in Boston, I was able to get them from a cut out bin for under 10$. I also got a case of Spice Route Chakalaka for under 9 a btl, spicy and tasty rhone style.

I agree that the Chocolate block is vintage variable and is over $30/btl here so I have it rarely.

Those are great prices.
I paid £18 a bottle for 06 Semillon inc taxes on release, and it is a stunner.
I have the Cab and Syrah from 06 as well… Which I am leaving for at least another 10!!
