TN: A cracking Tassie Pinot Noir

TN: 2010 Holyman Pinot Noir (Tasmania, Australia)
I had the pleasure to meet Jo Holyman when he was working in Coonawarra and Mount Benson a decade or more ago. He started his label whilst in Mt Benson with some tasty reds including a cheeky Shiraz that he even more cheekily named Cotes du Robe (Robe, being a costal town not far from Mt Benson).
He is now back on the family farm in Tasmania (under cover, hiding from teh Cotes Du Rhone AC) , making wines from his own vineyard and between catching a few waves at the local breaks, he’s fashioning some superb wines from this emerging Pinot Noir region.
This is loaded with liquer cherries, bright and pure dark fruits, trimmed with briar and earth. It is sappy and curvaceous in the mouth delivering an essence of perfectly ripe Pinot Noir. Just delicious.
Great job Jo!

Cheers,
Kent

I tried the 2006 Stoney Rise Holyman few years ago. It was quite nice. Still have a bottle left

Thanks Kent,

Will keep my eyes out for a bottle of this…

I spoke with Joe yesterday, he’s off to do vintage with Gregory at JCB later in the year. His 2010 is very good Ausie Pinot and keep your eye out for the 2010 Project X to be released in a few months.

Having just worked in tassie for almost 4 months i had the opportunity to taste extensively in the state, and across their entire range of wines, Stony Rise was hands down among the top 2 or 3 producers IMO as well as others I was tasting with. They have a great site, do a great job taking care of everything, and the owners are fantastic people as well. I am just sorry i was not able to bring some of their wine back to the states for cellaring.
