TN: 99 DRC Echezeaux

simply the best Echezeaux I have ever tasted, this gorgeous wine is fabulous. With a powerful nose of ripe dark fruit echoed by a palate of rich black and blue fruit, there is spice and Vosne class–a wine of great distinction and class. The palate density is incredible. This is great wine. Breathtaking.

Sheesh! You mean the increase in prices for DRC Ech over the last 10 years has been justified!?

I have some Ech from Rouget that has been aging in the cellar. I’m curious to see if Uncle Henri’s influence is noticeable. Got some from Grivot and Arnoux too that could be interesting…?

Loved the 1990 but this sounds it may be better?

Agreed 100% Alan. had a lovely bottle a couple of years ago.

The 90 DRC Echezeaux is brilliant, the 99 even better. Thanks for the note Alan.

I really like Echezeaux and I reckon DRC consistently make the best version. Why I love red Burgundy is mainly for the perfume and texture of the wines. With great Echezeauz you get wonderful spicy, perfumed fruit and fine lacy texture and for those makers who make several Grand Crus it is generally priced the cheapest.

Nice notes Alan. I think DRC became progressively better over the years.
When I look at the development of RSV I have the impression that they never made better wine than today.

Agreed.

Throw in the '05 to that mix also, twice I have seen it blind be called either (DRC) LT or RSV…

Very nice note. Thanks Alan.

Thanks for the note, Alan.

Your impressions are intriguing. I don’t think that I have a '99, but intend to look through my cellar when I get back from our lake cottage later this month.

Alan, I could not agree more with your note. Had this last year, a really great wine indeed.

DRC Ech is the weakest red ( beside Corton for recent year ) in their portfalio. From some recent horizontal Ech tastings ( single blind ) for recent years, Leger-Belair and Dom.dEugenie is now producing the best Ech by miles… pileon

For my money, I would buy Ech from Liger-Belair and Don dEugenie anytime over DRC Ech… [cheers.gif]

Paul…no.

See my post No. 11. Liger-Belair Ech is justified…

Paul - Rouget Ech is a favorite of mine. Pre-02s should have noticeable “influence” - think that’s the vintage line.

Sounds great…though it’s hard to imagine a better Echezaux than the Rouget/Jayer example, which I think is most often the “best” wine in that stable.

Echezaux is a candidate for “most underrated” grand cru. I’ve had so many wonderful examples over the years…though only a couple DRC.

Love the Meo Camuzet Echezeaux! But there’s Vosne 1e Cru that I often prefer above the Grand Cru Echezeaux …

Had a '61 and '64 DRC Echezeaux last month and both were still going strong.

Some people dismiss Echezaux as a vineyard. I’ve had too many great examples to dismiss its potential…though I’ve also “preferred” some VR BeauxMonts to examples of Echezaux (and lots of people prefer Rouget’s Cros Parantoux to his Echezaux…though I don’t). But, I think the focus should be on the vineyard’s potential…and it is grand cru “potential”, IMO–even if some examples don’t seem grand cru quality.

Staurt I agree.

Similar to Ech many dismiss CdV too but for me it is a happy hunting ground for G-crus in CdN. It comes down to your preference of taste and price also … champagne.gif

The Liger-Belair is seriously good though if pushed to choose I would go with DRC.

Personal preference aside, try them side-by-side for a whole evening, you will see why I am giving my opinion in Post no. 11 in this thread.
