WINES WITH KDAWG - Washington, DC (6/30/2010)
Opened some random bottles with Keith while he was in town.

2007 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 'M’ - Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
Consistently one of the more interesting noses for gruner’s I’ve come across. Nice amounts of flint, smoke, tropical fruits, and even some light tar. Wonderful acidity and really suave mouthfeel. Another great effort by Pichler. (94 pts.) -
1994 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Explosive nose of olives, meat drippings, sour cherry, pine shavings, and roasted herbs. Great mouthfeel overall, that didn’t show any signs of slowing down. Great bottle. (91 pts.) -
1986 Château Pape Clément - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Elegant nose of pencil lead, dried tobacco leaf and sous bois abound. Underneath the primary nose, there was also a subtle cherry smoke component that was quite nice. Unfortunately, the best part of this wine was its nose. Very disjointed at this point, with almost harsh acidity. Feels like this has faded. I also do not have a lot of experience with Pape Clement to know if this is a dead wine or a wine that is in a dumb phase. (86 pts.)
