TN 92 Ponsot Clos De La Roche, 83 ZH Guwurtz V.T. 77 Taurasi Mastroberardino

A visit to Napa and Sonoma last week, tasted plenty out of barrel, lots of cool wines tasted but tucked away some older vintage wines for the end of the day to bring us back down to earth and get away from the ripeness of young wines…

83 Zind - wow, a memorable wine, golden straw color with a thick viscosity, tangerine nose mixed with a petrolium nuance, honey, apricot straight out of the shoot, felt heavy in the mid palate , more orange/tangerine but not at all tart just felt really classy in the mouth, did not want the glass to empty but could not resist.

92 Ponsot Clos De La Roche VV- Picked 8 btls of this up two weeks ago and hit the jackpot, stunning pinot, near indescribable nose, just a whole plethora of floral notes, some spice and truffle, black cherry , smokey palate , this wine was crazy complex and kept changing and asking questions…still never got it figured out was bowled over by it.

77 Taurasi Mastroberardino Ris- this was a will it or won’t it type wine, not much experience at all with older vintages but this drank exceptionally well, was loaded with brooding dark fruits and was really tightly wound, after a two hour decant it came alive and was sensational in every department, smokey , meaty even gamey nose, tabacco and leather, dark fruits , a tiny bit sharp on the finish but loaded with fruit still, was still improving late into the night.

90 figeac- ahhh Bordeaux, what a treat after tasting young wines all day, all about finesse and elegance here, cedar and compost nose, bright fruit at the start with blackberry and a soft sweetness, had this at dinner and it improved over the evening an as usual the last taste was the best.

It is phil, I have one left, we will have to try it this week [thumbs-up.gif]

A friend gave me some half bottles of the 92 a few months ago. He’d picked them up for a song, and said they may have been the single best buy he’d ever had. Not sure what Ponsot did there, but it worked that year.

And not only Ponsot-it’s currently a vintage that provides incredible joy where the best sources are concerned. I wonder if 2000 will be like this in eight years time? I hope so.
