Man, I just love when you hit a great bottle from an “abysmal vintage” that lets you pick it up for a song. This was a resolved, fresh, and elegant expression of raspberry fruit and minerals with the slightest hint of leathery spice. This was incredibly balanced with some great acidity to compliment its moderately noticeable tannic weight. Whoever said all '75s were brutally tannic and helplessly devoid of fruit has certainly not tasted this wine. 91+ pts.
Oh, in case anyone was wondering, the Kit Kats made for an insanely awesome pairing.
1975 was a great vintage. The wines are remarkably long lived, with brutal tannins in their youth, and there were a lot of wines that just couldn’t make the long haul (which gives the vintage it’s spotty reputation). But Lafite, Petrus, La Mission Haut Brion, Haut Brion, Latour and many others all made fabulous wines. The La Mission and Latour from '75 are considered some of the greatest wines those estates had ever made.
I’ve had great luck with much of the Petite Chateaux of the vintage as well.
Recently (i.e., 3 months ago) had good bottles of 1975 Beychevelle, Montrose, Certan, & d’Issan (nb., one bottle of d’Issan was off, but the other in good form).
