TN: 2023 Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley

  • 2023 Grosset Riesling Polish Hill Clare Valley - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley (9/28/2024)
I've found a few recent vintages of Polish Hill a bit sweeter/riper than usual, and sometimes a bit unbalanced on release because of that sweetness. This one's also a bit sweeter than the old PHs used to be (perhaps that's climate change, perhaps it's the house style changing slightly); it doesn't feel fully dry and it's more in halbtrocken/barely feinherb territory. But it also has bracing acids and a firm mineral base beneath the bright fruit and gentle herbal/floral accents, and it's incredibly compelling with tremendous balance and a freshness and energy to the fruit that makes each sip invite the next. The slight sweetness rounds out the palate nicely, and the whole package is incredibly easy to drink. As good a dry(ish) Riesling as I've had in a while.

Funnily, I found the same thing on the last vintage I tried (which I think was 2022) - they’ve become a teensy bit sweeter. Still, one of the best Rieslings in the world.

Australia is kicking a** and taking names in the R game.

Agree with these comments. Maybe just slightly riper fruit. I remember marvelling at a middle-aged Clos St Hune and commenting on the preceived sweetness, to be informed that it was fruit sweetness, not from RS.
They are certainly more approachable as youngsters than the wines of a decade ago.

I haven’t had the 2023 vintage but would love to find a tech sheet… Hard to imagine any significant RS in these wines even if they were criticized for being too shrill in the past.

I’ll climb on and agree, the last couple recent vintages have been a touch sweeter for me too. Still good, though!
