TN: 2023 Bernhard Huber Malterdinger Chardonnay Alte Reben (Germany, Baden)

Probably need to pay more attention to German Chardonnay

  • 2023 Bernhard Huber Malterdinger Chardonnay Alte Reben - Germany, Baden (8/8/2026)
Blind: Struggled between Burgundy and Oregon Chardonnay. Settled on Oregon but wasn't in love with the call.

I guess I need to drink more German Chardonnay. Very interesting. Warning: this wine needs a good 30-60 minute decant.

Pop n Pour and the reduction is massive. I like that but it doesn't blow off immediately. Huge gun smoke and flint nose.

There are probably 4 stone fruits in this wine with pear and yellow apple. Something for everyone. Medium plus acidity and salinity. Herbal component, a mix of mustard seeds, whole peppercorns, coriander seeds, and bay leaves. Sounds like pickling spice? Yes.

    Good balance and finish.

That is an excellent wine. The top Huber chards albeit much more expensive are extremely impressive.

And lots of information on German Chard on here!

his Schlossberg Chardonnay is amazing. Burgundy grand cru level. If you can find it, get it.
