TN: 2022 Kobayashi Winery Syrah Sans Soufre WeatherEye Vineyard

Hey, this is a pretty darn likable New World Syrah. Other than a couple recent Pax offerings, I have not bought Syrah outside of France much at all in years. I love the funk we get from the Old World. This wine is fairly well-perfumed, of the clean sort. Like a crisp Chanel perfume, perhaps a bit manufactured, not really showing those tell-take signs of my type of Syrah. It is pleasant, however. The fruit is pure, layered, fairly deep. While it runs to the darker spectrum it has a ribbon of blood red orange citrus to it. Some tarry notes as well. Finishes with fine chalky tannins. A very fresh wine with some depth. I will score this conservatively but think some up-side is possible.

RAJ, was that a Berserkerday purchase?

No, were they part of BD?

Bought direct from the winery.

Just looked, they’re have not participated in BD but @ToddFrench was looking to recruit them.

I can’t keep straight who has participated. :joy:

This a GREAT winery!

Thank you for the note.

I have yet to find a new world syrah that scratches the itch for that distinctive old world syrah funk.

The other night I also popped my lone bottle, hey I’m not going to try to compare to my Gonon’ Chave etc but it was a damn nice bottle the purity of the fruit the hint of funk was really nice and if given a chance I will buy more to drink in the medium term. Being sans soffre I killed the entire bottle fearing it might become a microbial mess if I left it overnight woof. But what do I know

Don’t think Travis and Mario can do BD - they sell out their entire production each release, pretty much.

Great note bud - glad you dug this! Ive been debating how long to wait before opening the sans soufre syrah and the viognier, but will probably get into them both sooner than later. Def the Viognier this summer.

I have one of these. They are hard to come by. I managed to buy 3 Kobayashi wines at Pike’s Place Market a few weeks ago. I will hold onto it for a bit.

We had a 21 Syrah not the SS and it was way too young. The 21 Skin Contact Marsanne was otherworldly though.

Lot’s of great stuff going on in Milton Freewater and Red Mountain.

@Rich_Brown , When you crack the Viognier, give it plenty of air, even better decant for 3 + hrs and you will be (Richly!) rewarded. I have had the Koby Viognier more than any other of their wines I can say this with absolute confidence.

Awesome feedback, really appreciate it @Dale_McClaran !

Do you think I’m better off just waiting before I open it?

Hey Alf, can you prognosticate on what type of evolution your crystal ball sees for this wine? Any smokey bloody bacon-y nuances to come? Inquiring minds…

Great note. I took a chance, left about 40% for tonight. Never know with SS but this is not a delicate wine at all. Has some structure and tannins. Will find out in 11.5 hours!

First night was just crystalline, pure fruit and pretty essences, florals and fruits. Let’s see what it shows tonight with more air.

I thought of you when I was enjoying this wine - no, don’t get all excited and start booking flight tickets! This is a wine you will totally enjoy.

Not at all, it just REALLY loves some Hang time (air) before sippin time. Please report back when you open one, curious to hear if you love it as much as I do.

Perfect, thanks Dale! And will do!

No fall off on this second night. Fresh and aromatic. Tannins still chewy and chalky. This can age a bit.
