TN: 2021 Weingut Heid Fellbacher Goldberg Riesling Erste Lage (Germany, Württemberg)

Trying to expand my scope here a bit as far as German wine goes so here we come Württemberg. @Otto_Forsberg thinks I’m an imbecile for wanting to drink Riesling from a region that excels in almost any other variety but it but hey, I make my own decisions and suffer the results. Today I decided to make flammkuchen and while it didn’t turn out pretty it was very tasty. I fried this awesome pancetta on the pan until golden, removed it and fried the onions in the fat and ooh the resulting flavor, something to die for. The wine - while quite punchy on its own - was just the perfect match. I’ll be exploring Württemberg wines further but clearly they can make good Riesling there too.

On the nose lemony and grapefruity with a ceryain green edge to it - nothing screaming overly ripe here but then it’s 2021. A pretty vivid nose really and very bright with things like nettle, jalapeño, leesy yeastiness and iodine popping up. On the palate this is of the electric kind with high acidity and a tangy fruit expression akin to the nose and it’s just very youthfully vibrant overall. Pretty linear, steely even. Somewhat nervous and very refreshing, a very uplifting drink. Gets markedly sour and salty on the finish which might deduct points as far as social drinking goes but very clearly this is a food wine and today it performed like a champion with a classic flammkuchen.

I’ve been trying this quixotic approach for quite some time

I love Rieslings from Württemberg, especially because they are different than Rieslings from other regions.

There is something to it, no doubt!

Having tried this one and another from Dautel I’m starting to be a fan too. In fact just bought a Dautel GG Riesling and probably can’t resist the temptation for very long.

Try a Beurer GG or for something a little different Dolde.

Thanks! Hmmm I’ve had some wines from a Württemberg producer called Beurer but haven’t heard of Beuer (nor Dolde). I need to keep my eyes open for both.

Lassak!

Sorry that was a typo. Dolde is a very cool small under-the-radar winery.

No probs! I recall quite liking some of the Beurer wines so a good reminder and I have a source for the. Dolde seems quite out there but apparently the wines are not that obviously natty in style, no?

For Riesling or in general? I’m only seeing a Lemberger where I shop for the wines of Württemberg

I like their Rieslings a lot.

The aromatics of the '21 Lassak Spätburgunder that I tried some months ago were really special, but I was not totally convinced by the palate. I would love to try their Riesling though, I wouldn’t be the first, nor the last time that I’m not convinced by a producer’s red wine but at the same time I love the whites and vice-versa.

I did a double take when I saw how cheap these wines are! Plus Helmut Dolde looks like someone I’d love to share a couple glasses with.

The whites love you?

Drink it blind next to a Foillard and report

Sometimes I think that I might be a wine gigolo

You did that tasting, didn’t you? Was it with Lassak or another Spätburgunder?

Lassak but a 2022. I still have to be convinced that those are two different wines.
