TN: 2021 Weingut Dautel Bönnigheimer Steingrüben Riesling Großes Gewächs

Not that many Württemberg TNs here lately  This is pretty cool stuff for all the acid-heads out there. A very unadulterated style which seems to be this producer’s calling card. Otto would surely prefer that I praised almost any other variety when it comes to Württemberg but I find it intriguing that Dautel produces such a neat expression of this grape. Could definitely rebuy if I come across it again.

Really yellow-fruited (mirabelle, karambola) on the nose with a tart edge, emerging petrol and crushed rock. On the palate has certain ripeness and concentration but is more than anything very dry, savory, firm and acidity-driven. Markedly salty and really intense with terrific tension. Not the easiest sipper, makes you crave for something fatty or creamy, but a stellar performer at the table. As I suppose could be expected from Württemberg the expression is restrained compared to most German and Alsatian Riesling but this style works for me.

Thanks for the Note. Dautel makes wonderful Spatburgunder as well.

I’m looking at the 2021 Schupen Spätburgunder (46€). Worth the tariff?

Well I did recently post about a disappointing bottle of 2023 Lassak Hambach Riesling. But yes, not the most popular region.

I’ve had the 2020 Schupen. It was quite ‘new world’ in style, I very well could have mistaken it for a Santa Barbara Pinot Noir. It could sit for a few years, it was still pretty tightly knit, but very well endowed.

Sorry, had missed that one. Too bad it failed to deliver!

Hmmm doesn’t sound like my kind of a thing. To be honest I often struggle with Spätburgunder no matter who the producer is.
