TN: 2021 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Rancia

  • 2021 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Rancia - Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG (5/4/2025)
Rancia (and Felisina) represents a producer that I have followed since the inception of this wine buying disease in the late 90’s, so its always a treat to try a young one from a quality vintage. Decanted 3 hrs. Solid nose, some flowers and sweet berries come to play, but a little reserved. I put the bottle down watching Raging Bull and half of Valley Girl (a really good double feature I might add!) so over about 3 and a half hrs. The first two glasses were more French oak prominent, a little slim mid palate, and slightly drying tannins. But the 3rd glass, it really gained weight and filled in, exhibiting the regal traits that make for a promising young Rancia. My early guess is this will be a good to great vintage, but a touch behind the 10 and the 04. But who knows…?

Since when did Rancia become a Gran Selezione?

2021 is when the labeling changed IIRC.

My limited experience with other Gran Seleione is that it they have a heavier oak treatment.

I just love the Rancia and the note had me a little worried . Has the oak treatment changed?

I never taste them young so maybe I didn’t notice the oak in 04, 99, 97

Barry, It may or may not be an all time Rancia, but I wouldn’t loose any sleep over the oak treatment if you have enjoyed past vintages - all the more so with age. I suspect that the wine was simply a little closed and folded in on itself so the other aspects, such as the wood, tannin and such were a little more pronounced.
