TN: 2021 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Granges

2021 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Les Granges - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon (10/5/2023)
Dark garnet, medium body, moderate barnyard brett is what I am able to get from the nose, nothing that telegraphs Cab Franc, just brett. Takes a bit of swishing to extract much flavor from the palate, there's some medium darker cherry and raspberry, pretty good acidity, fine, slightly chalky tannins, some light herbal pyrazines are buried in there adding astringency, and a sense of the brett, though not to the point of distraction. A bit of earthy green funk creeps in with more air. Overall, a pleasant wine, on the earthy side, but fans of Loire Cab Franc in that style should be happy. (88 points)

Sounds right up my alley. I was thinking this wine is probably an excellent one in the vintage considering how the 21 Les Grezeaux performs.

Quite sure you would love it. I don’t dislike it at all, will report back on the rest of the bottle tonight.

les granges is the one baudry i avoid at this point…always tastes like its the lower tier wine that it is.

it never overdelivers.

Interesting I bought a bottle of this last week. I went to purchase some Les Grezeaux but the stores inventory was off and they were actually out of stock. For $20 I figured Les Granges was worth a shot.

Opened it on Wednesday and I have to say I did not find in particularly interesting or tasty. Nothing wrong with it, just sort of a bland wine for my taste. I may revisit a glass tonight as I’m not sure I drank a complete glass. For the price, not sure what I expected.

Night two: brett notes seems a little less, there’s more of the vegetal/herbal character I expect, some green tobacco, it’s a reserved, kind of brooding wine, but there is enough there there. I’m quite enjoying it, and sure it will age well.
