TN: 2021 Alfredo Egia Bizkaiko Txakolina Izaki (Creature)

After being introduced to this producer via their Rebel Rebel cuvee by a friend, I decided to not only buy more Rebel Rebel, but also some of this cuvee to try.

Liquid minerals in a glass. Flint, crushed rocks, grilled lemons make way for some green apple, fennel and almond notes. Slight resinous, oily quality to it. This is a rich, textural wine, yet there’s real verve and tension to the wine with the mineral components and acidity. Paired fabulously with some fresh seafood. Very curious to revisit this with some age to it and try more from this producer in the future.

    ABV: 13.0%
    Closure: twin top
    Decant: N/A; consumed over ~3h
    Stem: Grassl Liberte
Extra info: manually harvested and directly pressed with whole bunches. Half spontaneously fermented in barrels and raised in two old 400L barrels; the other half in stainless steel. Fined for turbidity with a small amount of SO2 being added

Here’s another wine I like and don’t have often enough, Txakolina! Thanks for the TN.

It’s a producer worth checking out. Have only had 3 bottles so far, but I’m very excited to try more, especially his Rebel Rebel cuvee. It’s quite unique. Alfredo tops up some barrels and leaves some others to intentionally oxidise. You end up with this txakolina that’s reminiscent of some Jura whites with some salty, leesy, and a blend of reductive and oxidised notes. Have not had a txakolina like it before.
