- 2020 Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley (4/19/2025)
Two years ago I said that I am not normally an Anderson Valley Pinot Noir fan, but this wine was excellent. Last night the same conclusion applied, with some extra complexity from the additional time in bottle. There was a hint of earthiness to accompany the fruit, which made the wine all the more interesting. I wish I had come to Peay Vineyards wines earlier in my journey, as I would have bought a whole lot more of them.
Yes, I have always thought they make really fine wines–especially their Scallop Shelf estate pinot noir, For whatever reason, they don’t get much love on this board. They are subtle, even quiet wines that show best on their own, not in big tastings.
You ignore their Syrahs at your own peril. They are stunning!!
Who says I ignore them?
Merely responding to what I read.
What’s funny is that I tried their Syrahs before I ever tried their Pinots. Started on those when I was in a deep Syrah phase around 2012.
You were ahead of me. My Syrahs start with the '15, while the PNs start with the '16s, as do their Chardonnays. They are an important part of my cellar. I expect that climate change will make their wiines all the more significant.
If you ever get a chance to visit the vineyard, you will be richly rewarded. It is not easy to get to and you need to dedicate a day to going there. I think it’s the most beautiful and coolest vineyard. I’ve been to in California. And you get to spend a couple hours with Nick which is a treat beyond words. I’ve been there twice and each time after being there a couple hours I feel guilty taking his time while at the same time wishing I could stay for another few hours. It’s an incredible place.
I am envious.
