TN: 2020 Fattoria Viticcio Foglia Tonda (Italy, Tuscany, Chianti)

  • 2020 Fattoria Viticcio Foglia Tonda - Italy, Tuscany, Chianti (11/2/2024)
My wife and I tasted this at the Viticcio estate, Greve in Chianti, earlier this year. Our host explained that Foglia Tonda is an ancient relative of Sangiovese, and it’s somewhat uncommon. The grapes for this bottling are not from their estate, but rather grown in Maremma. We thought it was quite good so I bought some and it just arrived last week.

Very pure fruit, bright cherry with a hint of savoriness, zesty acidity, tannins are soft but add a little tension on the finish. Kind of comes off like a Rosso. I dig it. (91 points)

What you mean by this? At least I read it like “this taste like a red wine”.

Rosso di Montalcino.

Righty. It was quite hard to figure that out if this was a Toscana Rosso from Chianti and there was no mention of Montalcino!

Yes, kind of lazy on my part. I suppose it could compare to any number of Tuscan reds, but it reminded me of a RdM. A lot of upfront fruit, very lively, not much oak. Food friendly.
