- 2019 Giovanni Montisci Cannonau di Sardegna Barrosu Franzisca Riserva - Italy, Sardinia, Cannonau di Sardegna (8/18/2025)
Decanted 3 hrs. In a word, wow. The only other high end Sardinian wine I have any experience with is the Argiolas Turriga - which is really good wine, but no where near the level on display last night with this gem. It had all the attributes that comprise a special bottle, but assembled in a manner that was totally new and unique to me. Being Cannonau / Grenache, the acidity was low, but loads of structure - some dark strawberry fruit, but poked in the back a ways. Rosemary and other Mediterranean herbs are a constant, and a close of smoky charcoal embers than really lingers for a good while. I would LOVE to try this with wild boar or other such game meat. This flirted with a feral quality at times, but always right sized and stayed balanced, poised and just a total joy to drink. I loved this. (95 points)
