2019 Fontodi Chianti Classico - Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG (9/5/2022)
Chilled this baby down, cuz it's a 180 degrees here today...open in bottle for 3hrs...prettier red fruited than I thought it would be? Absolute GORGEOUS dusty earth, dried cherries, rose bouquet, wintergreen tobacco wrapper, red licorice, tar nose! Refreshingly bright and lifted fruits with a nice twang to it...med bodied with transparency and elegance...wonderful freshness with pomegranate/blood orange acidity...vibrant...yet with a solid Chianti earthy mineral structure...a graphite dryness that I adore...even showing a smoothness of old leather...dusty barrel spice...drinking super well right now...DO recommend a nice chill on it...but plenty of structure to drink elegantly well for many more. Been a long time since I've had a Fontodi CC...scratch head and mumble why? (94 points)

I really enjoy Fontodi, but availability is lousy, and pricing is much higher than Felsina.

When we went to Italy(Chianti) a few years ago, we drank on a bunch of Felsina and Fontodi Chianti…loved them both, but when we got back, for some reason, I kept only loading up on Felsina? Price, I’m sure. I’ve been kind of getting bored with them of late, and I happen to see this one pop up at the local Bevmo down the street! Definitely more money than Felsina, and I probably paid more for this than I could find elsewhere…but now I will be in search for more! A refreshingly “new” look on CC for my palate!

The Fontodi is one of my favorite CCs because it’s quite accessible, generous, and just plain tasty. It doesn’t have searing acidity but is still fresh and retains typicity. I think the wine is worth $40, but it just feels expensive because we are used to buying good CC for $25-30.
Anyway, this is what I reach for with a nice wood fired pizza.
Yea no doubt, hard to beat the Felsina bottlings. I’ll get this Fontodi off Buzzi’s note!

Why is “searing acidity” good?
Sounds painful.
yeah the problem with my buying on this one is that most of the Rancia I own I paid only a couple dollars more than the price of the Fontodi CC. the regular Felsina CCR is still a good bit less than this CC.
and I say that fully loving Fontodi and what they do. Vigna del Sorbo is one of my favorite wines from Italy.

I’ve always found Fontodi more rich and modern? My go to is Castell’in,
Always enjoyed Fontodi, a tad towards modern, but really delicious, and different than Felsina, but in a good way.
Big fan of Monsanto too, especially CCR.
Some more structured wines can be unapproachable in their youth, so it’s good that the Fontodi is ready to go on release with a PnP. But on the flip side, I can see some people finding the Fontodi too modern or wanting something more ageable.
