TN: 2019 Domaine Servin Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre

Not Servin up the goods here! Wasn’t a fan of this bottle. Drinkable, but more like a Viognier than Chablis to me(wife agrees)…citrus martini burn…sweet and floral to the ripe side…missing the chalky limestone and sea air that I love in Chablis. Not discouraged, as this was my first wine from Servin, bought a 6 pack…heard good things, so will see what a couple years will do. The 19 La Chablisienne Montmains just had a couple days ago, and in same price point, blows this out of the water! But, judgment reserved until further tries from Servin. (82 pts.)

The Vilmart…fantastic as always!

Thanks Buzz. I bought both of those wines you mentioned but have yet to try either. So you probably won’t try another of the Servin for a couple of years or will curiosity get the better of you sooner?

guess it’s good you didn’t buy a Tonnerre of it.

The last vintage that I had of this was 2014 and it was spectacularly good. I wonder if what you experienced was due to vintage characteristics.

I bought some of these due to big hype in another thread. Gulp — never seen a score anywhere near that low from Buzz.

I found the 2017 very enjoyable with plenty of sea breeze showing. Sounds like 2019 is not following through…!

Haven’t had Servin (have one in my fridge) but Louis Michel MDT is definitely drinking a bit lighter and more acidic vs 18 or 17, so odd that this would be so ripe.

Really surprised to see your take on this, Buzz, as our palates are usually quite aligned. Our notes couldn’t really read any differently!

This pours medium straw in the glass. The nose is expressive and complex showing tremendous classic Chablis character loaded with chalk, oyster shell, golden delicious apple, pear, rainwater, cold steel, and touches of cold cream. The palate has notable dry extract, paired with lovely ripe golden delicious apple and pear fruit, and a lovely medium plus acidity. The finish lingers nicely showing plenty of chablis character on the finish including the requisite chalk and oyster notes. All in all this is a lovely bottle and a nice value. There is some slightly ripe character to this wine that I’d attribute to vintage, but impressively this still retains the Chablis character that one looks for. Count me as a fan. (93 pts.)

I sincerely hope you give it some time and try another bottle in a different setting as I believe you might have a better experience. Hope you didn’t get a bad six pack somehow (heat damage, bad corks, etc…).

Yeah…there was just something not right with my bottle. Maybe the Vilmart threw it off? I don’t know…I mean I serv-ed the wine up pretty nicely for success…beautiful day at the beach, lobster rolls/potato chips, spiegelau glasses, wife by my side…??? Will definitely try another at home soon.

Thought it’d be servin up the goods. Shiet.

Had a bottle of this over the last two nights. A disappointing showing. There is an herbal green shading to the fruit and some almond skin bitterness to the finish. A bit dilute and thin. It feels like the grapes were harvested before maturity.

Less good on day two.

I didn’t have it blind, but no way I would have guessed chardonnay. Maybe like a unripe Chenin or Rhone.

Not the wine for me. And it’s rare that I don’t enjoy a Chablis.

I agree with Buzz’s score
