I saw a lot of chatter on the Costco thread, so when my local had a bottle for $25, I grabbed one, figuring that I could go back for more if I enjoyed it. I will not be going back for more. While there’s room for improvement, I question whether it will ever turn into anything interesting.
2019 Château Siran - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux (12/27/2022)
Drank over two days.
Decanted for an hour before tasting. Initial impressions were that it was a perfectly cromulent wine but it didn't have any sense of place and it was too ripe and too polished for Bordeaux. The palate was medium weight, with good acidity and the tannins were surprisingly well integrated into the wine. As the evening wore on, some green notes and bitterness emerged, which made for a more interesting tipple.
On night two, the wine became more interesting, with the oak emerging and the tannins growing coarser. While I think that this is a fine budget Bordeaux, it is far too anonymous for my liking. (87 points)
Lol, thanks for the note. I just saw this at my local Costco for $27 and was about to grab a couple but remembered your note. Instead I picked up a few $18 Kirkland Chablis.
I tried to steer Corey away from this wine, but I guess at the price, taking a flyer on one is OK. The dude is finding tremendous values in Bordeaux, I’m jealous. I have not enjoyed any of the recent versions of château siran. It’s very well-made, but it’s also very glossy, lacks any sense of place.
Thanks for the note, this is one of the wines most widely recommended by critics in the 2019 in bottle reviews last year. I was actually looking for it in French hypermarche last summer, but perhaps it is a good job I didn’t find it.
You likely would not have hated it had you found some. Its a well made wine in the sense that it doesn’t have any rough edges. It’s just completely anonymous and doesn’t speak to Bordeaux.
I didn’t buy a ton of this, but certainly bought some to put down and let the baby fat melt off based on William and Neal’s reviews, and bought a few mags for my youngest and grabbed a 750ml at Costco to try over next weeks. Will post some impressions.
I purchased this EP and also tried at the UGC at Union Station. For the price, I thought it had solid potential, but I don’t plan checking it or really any of the '19s for at least 4-5 years.
If it turns into something, I’ll share a bottle with you.
I love what they’re doing at Siran these days. IMO, since 2015, the wines have never been better. They’re in contention as one of the top 3 value wines in the Margaux appellation today and one of the better deals from the Left Bank.
For those of you thinking it’s not a wine of Margaux character, I’d like to see you in a blind tasting nail all the appellations correctly.
Tried it tonight. At this point I don’t think it is some glossy Margaux as I harken back to 2003 Lascombes that was a vanilla milkshake, and I don’t get some crazy overoaked notes. Do I think it is well made and sorted grapes, yes. Ultimately, my gripe is that it doesn’t feel long lived.
Nose of black cherry, plum, with softer tannin structure I expect for Margaux. Palate has mostly primary fruits with a touch of of spice snd some florals like hydrangea that adds complexity. Palate is primary red and black fruits with good acidity to keep it fresh.
Tried it alongside a 2013 Meyney to have a sense of place and the gloss factor. Held its own.
I have very little Chablis experience but I really enjoyed this with a shrimp risotto we made. It makes me want to dive deeper into Chablis or similar. Where’s a good place to step to from here that is somewhat reasonable. Costco also had an '18 Jadot Saint Romain. Don’t know much about it but would be willing to try it
I think this has some legs in it and am glad I went long on it in EP, even though I only saved $.50 off the Costco price. I’m a sucker for Petit Verdot and this certainly has some inky plushness to it. I tasted both this and the '19 Moulin Saint-Georges this week, and if pressed, prefer this.
2019 Château Siran - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux (5/31/2023)
– decanted 1.25 hrs. before initial taste –
– tasted non-blind over 1.5 hrs –
NOSE: tight/reserved; red-fruited; a bit high-toned, with some well-judged oak; about a half hour into tasting a slight wet stones mineral note emerged.
BODY: medium bodied.
TASTE: juicy acidity; lots of oak; medium-fine drying tannins; a touch bitter; approx. 30 min. into tasting, this really turned a corner, revealing a pleasant floral note and gradually becoming more immediately approachable. Ash tasted this blind, and said she’d pay up to $80 – so a smashing success there; I like it, too, although not that much. Killer deal at $25!
2019 Château Siran - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux (5/25/2023)
Needs 2h decant to show its stuff. Followed over a few hours.
Dark cherries, clay pot, dark red florals on the nose. Supple oak as well. Palate is medium full body with nice acidity and supple tannins. Transitions from darker and rich to lighter raspberry and bright cherry. Maintains a background of oak that frames everything beautifully without being the focus. Has some subtle BDX terroir earthy notes. Finish has some nice freshness, red-purple lift, and supple chocolatey oak, and tannic structure is making my gums a little dry.
Tasting the wine, I would expect a CT average of 90.4, not 91.2. This is good not great, and a rather strong expression of Margaux. It has some telltale notes of elegance, but then pushes that line just a bit. Outstanding value at $26 from Costco. This is a great "old world for new world drinkers" wine.
Drink now with a 2h decant or hold for 3-5 years. I'm 90-91 on this. It isn't as good as some wines I've scored 91, and it is certainly better than some wines I've scored 90. Let's say 90.7 and call it a day. (90 points)
