2019 Château Pavie Macquin - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru (6/20/2023)
– decanted about 1 hr. before initial taste –
– tasted non-blind over approx. 3 hrs. –
NOSE: medium+ expressiveness; rich red fruits, but there is an embedded high-toned aspect that keeps the rich fruity elements in check; not funky; gentle earthy note.
BODY: magenta-garnet color of great depth; medium-full bodied.
TASTE: fine, drying tannins; ripe; soft/almost plush, but has very nice acidity, lending a pleasant tautness to a wine that may otherwise come across as flabby; not bitter; not super oaky, but there is a gentle/well-judged earthy/oaky note there — like proper use of salt & pepper in cooking; black currant; about 2.5 hrs after opening, a rubber tire/alc. note did emerge. Approachable now, but clearly best to Hold. Gut impression score: low 90s.
